These wars continued, some due to religious differences and some fighting for more say in the government. There were several wars, mainly on religious grounds in 15 and Peasant revolts started in 1653. For instance Zürich sided with the Habsburgs against Glarus and Schwyz in 1446. As more areas joined the confederacy the battles continued and some cantons supported the Habsburgs. They had numerous battles with the Habsburgs until the final decisive battle at Morgarten in 1315. The Confederacy started in 1291 in central Switzerland with Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. Peasants were the foot soldiers as in most countries at the time. The knights (Ritter) who kicked out the Habsburgs were not peasants, but came from the noble families.
This is still in use, although relatively rare. Switzerland did have nobility, denoted by the word 'von' before the surnamme.
